Concept explainers
Which type(s) of rock is (are) made from previously existing rock? Which does not require high temperature and pressure for its formation?
The type of rock made from previously existing rock and does not require high temperature and pressure for its formation.
Answer to Problem 2TE
The metamorphic rocks are formed from pre-existing rocks such as igneous, sedimentary or earlier metamorphic.
Explanation of Solution
Metamorphic rocks substantially changed from their original source igneous, sedimentary, or earlier metamorphic. This occurred deep in Earth or near the magma underground. Thus, it forms when subjected to high temperature and pressure. These rocks are mostly found in the mountain ranges.
The three types of rocks can transform into the metamorphic rock under the effect of heat and pressure. The heat and pressure are sufficient to change the physical and chemical properties without melting the rock completely. The common metamorphic rocks are phyllite, schist, gneiss, quartzite and marble.
Conclusion:
Therefore, the metamorphic rocks are formed from pre-existing rocks such as igneous, sedimentary or earlier metamorphic.
