Concept explainers
How do chemical sediments produce rock? Name two chemical sedimentary rocks.
The process of formation of rock by chemical sediments and name of two chemical sedimentary rocks.
Answer to Problem 16TE
When minerals precipitate from water solutions, then the chemical sediments present in mineral form rocks. The two chemical sedimentary rocks are travertine and limestone.
Explanation of Solution
Chemical sedimentary rocks are formed when chemical sediments in water precipitate. These are basically are of two types, carbonates and evaporates. Carbonates are formed when the water contains a mineral called calcite. And evaporates are formed when a controlled water body evaporates. Examples of carbonate rocks are travertine and limestone. And examples of evaporates are gypsum and halite.
Travertine is formed by inorganic precipitation. Limestone is formed when the organisms present in water die, their shell and skeletal deposit as sediment.
Conclusion:
Therefore, when minerals precipitate from water solutions, then the chemical sediments present in mineral form rocks. The two chemical sedimentary rocks are travertine and limestone.
