Concept explainers
The three major types of rocks and the conditions of their origin.
Answer to Problem 11RQ
The three major types of rocks are igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks. Igneous rocks are formed when magma rises and solidifies before reaching Earth’s surface and form igneous rocks; metamorphic rocks are formed when the pre-existing rocks are subjected to high temperature and pressure and sediments rocks are formed when sediments come in suspension due to the effect of weathering.
Explanation of Solution
Igneous rock is formed when magma rises slowly and solidifies before reaching Earth’s surface. When metamorphic rocks under the effect of heat and pressure melt, they form magma. This magma rises and solidifies before reaching Earth’s surface forming igneous rocks.
Metamorphic rocks originate from igneous, sedimentary or earlier metamorphic. They occurred deep in Earth or near the magma underground. Thus, they are formed when the pre-existing rocks are subjected to high temperature and pressure.
The sediments which transport with air, water, ice and get deposited, then the rocks formed are called sedimentary rocks. Sedimentary rocks are formed when sediments come in suspension due to the effect of weathering. When these suspended sediments flow with air, water or ice from one place to other, they get deposited. They are deposited in layers horizontally.
Conclusion:
Therefore, the three major types of rocks are igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks.
