Chapter 22.4, Problem 25BYGO
Summary Introduction
Introduction:
Cancer is a condition that occurs because of the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells anywhere inside a body. Lungs are the major organ of respiration where the exchange of gases such as oxygen and carbon dioxide takes place. Lung cancer is the leading type of cancer happening worldwide. This cancer is due to an uncontrollable abnormal cell growth inside the lung. The major causes of lung cancer are cigarette smoking and air pollution.

How do stem cells rebuild lung tissue?
Cancer usually begins in the bronchi or bronchioles. Components of cigarette smoke contribute to the devel¬opment of cancerous tumours. Study the four diagrams below, which show the development and progression of lung cancer.

Patients diagnosed with emphysema have damaged alveoli. This results to fewer, larger air spaces instead of many small ones. Explain how this damage can lead to shortness of breath? The surface area of lungs is reduced. Hence, less oxygen can diffuse into the red blood cells. The surface area of lungs is increased. Hence, more oxygen can diffuse into the red blood B cells.
