Concept explainers
To classify: Whether the given elements are lanthanide or actinide.
Explanation of Solution
Introduction:
A tabular display of the chemical elements is known as a periodic table. In a periodic table, the elements are arranged by their atomic numbers, chemical properties and electronic configuration.
The given elements are: californium, europium, cerium, nobelium, terbium, uranium.
According to the periodic table, the lanthanides are the series of 14 elements located at the bottom of the periodic table. While, the actinides are the series of 15 elements located a row below the series of lanthanides.
In the given statement, the lanthanides are: europium, cerium, and terbium.
Actinides are: californium, nobelium and uranium.
Conclusion:
Hence, lanthanides are europium, cerium, and terbium whereas the actinides are californium, nobelium and uranium.
