Concept explainers
Interpretation: What are the IUPAC and common names of the following carboxylic acids?
a)
b)
c)
d)
Solution:
Concept introduction:
a) For IUPAC name we have to follow the following steps
i. We will first find out the longest chain of carbon in the given organic compound
ii. We will name the longest chain.
iii. We will identify the main
iv. We will number the carbons in the longest chain selected so that the attached groups attain lowest numeral as substituent
v. We will name the side groups or chains.
The common names for carboxylic acids are generally derived from the source of their occurrence. The substituent on chain are numbered with Greek letters
