Concept explainers
Interpretation: Give the condensed structural formula of the following carboxylic acids. Also give their IUPAC names.
a) A
b) A carboxylic acid with one ethyl group as substituent and with molecular formula
Concept introduction:
a) For IUPAC name we have to follow the following steps
i. We will first find out the longest chain of carbon in the given organic compound
ii. We will name the longest chain.
iii. We will identify the main
iv. We will number the carbons in the longest chain selected so that the attached groups attain lowest numeral as substituent
v. We will name the side groups or chains.
b) Condensed structural formula represents an organic compound in the form of line of text.
- We will write the carbons in a longest chain in their respective order
- The substituent is placed immediately next to the carbon on which they are attached and are put in parentheses.
- We can use explicit bonds if required to show the attachments.
