Chapter 13.6, Problem 14LO
Summary Introduction

To explain: The way in which expression of retroviruses genes is compared with the expression of genes found on chromosomes.

Introduction: Genes are sets of nucleotides that codes for a particular protein. It consists of all the information that is required for the production of proteins. Gene expression is a process by which genetic information from a gene is used for the production of proteins with appropriate functions.

Please explain how alternative gene expression is mediated by a recombination process in Salmonella? Please explain why does Salmonella use recombination-mediated alternative gene expression?
Which of the following is a known characteristic or procesds that can lead to genetic changes in some viruses?     When two different viral strains of the same type of virus infect a single individual, reassortment/mixing of segmented genome pieces can occur, resulting in new combinations of segments.     Genetic rearrangements of the viral genome occurs as a result of duplicate operons in the viral genome undergoing homologous recombination.     Environmental conditions trigger the SOS response in viruses, and leads to generation of errors/mutations in the viral genome.     Viral RNA polymerases display proofreading capability in replicating the viral genome of certain viruses.
Viruses are a contributing factor in 10-20% of human cancers.  Some viruses that contribute to human cancer do so as a result of certain steps in their replication cycle. Describe all the general steps of a viral replication cycle of a virus that could contribute to healthy cells turning cancerous. Which step(s) in particular could lead to cancer and how? Other viruses contribute to development of cancer in humans through expression of viral genes that mimic enhanced activity of certain normal human genes. What would you call the normal human gene? What would a likely function of the normal human gene be? What characteristic would the viral “mimic” gene promote in cancer cells? How would this benefit the virus?
