Chapter 11, Problem 22P
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The difference in the structures of glycogen and cellulose needs to be explained.

Concept introduction:

Carbohydrates are available in various forms like starch, cellulose, glycogen etc. They all are polysaccharides which contribute as an energy source in plants and animals. The human body needs sufficient intake of sugar or glucose which is an energy source of human cells. Glycogen and cellulose are the polysacchrides formed by sugar molecules called glucose. They are a good source of energy.

This is DNA. Locate the nitrogen bases (nitrogens are blue). Where are they located in the molecule?Locate the sugars and phosphates, and describe their location.  Adjacent nucleotides are linked by covalent phosphodiester bonds (-O-P-O-) produced by a condensation reaction. What parts of the adjacent nucleotides are linked by phosphodiester bonds? Two nitrogenous bases extending towards the middle of the double helix. Are there any covalent bonds between these bases? If there are no covalent bonds between these bases, what other kinds of bonds might hold the two strands of the double helix together?
R V. Phospholipids are the main structural lipids that comprise cellular and organellar membranes. One abundant phospholipid in bacterial cell membranes is phosphatidylethanolamine (PE), which has a generic structure shown on the right. Note that R1 R and R2 are representative alkyl chains of attached fatty acids, each having about 16 – 20 carbon atoms. a) The overall net charge in one PE molecule is: -2 -1 0 +1 +2 CH₂ Phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) -CH H₂C. b) The glycerophosphate backbone in PE is a: D-enantiomer c) The fatty acids are attached to PE via which type of bond? amine L-enantiomer racemic NH3 amide ester ether d) Draw the commonly used cartoon representation of one phospholipid molecule. Label the hydrophilic and hydrophobic parts.
