Chapter 11, Problem 11.53SP
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The reason behind the fact that ether will boil when the pump is on has to be explained.

Concept introduction:

A graph that represents the solid phase, liquid phase, and gaseous phase of one substance or mixture of a substance under various conditions of temperature and pressure is known as the phase diagram.

Temperature and pressure on a phase diagram at which gas, liquid, and solid phases coexist is called triple point. The maximum temperature and pressure in the phase diagram at which substance lies in liquid phases is called a critical point. The temperature and pressure at which liquid or gas is neither a true liquid nor a true gas is called a supercritical point.

The vacuum pump is used to remove air or gas particles from the container. The removal of air leads to a decrease in pressure inside the container. The boiling point of a liquid is defined as the temperature at that vapor pressure becomes equal to external pressure.
