Concept explainers
Interpretation:
The difference between a physical change and a chemical change must be explained.
Concept introduction:
In physical change, only change in state of a substance takes place whereas in chemical change, new substance is generated.
Answer to Problem 1E
In physical change no change of chemical nature of the substance takes place. On the otherhand, in chemical changes, new molecules are generated.
Explanation of Solution
Physical changes are like melting of ice, evaporation of water and dissolution of salts. In all these changes, change in state takes place. When ice is melted, the solid ice is changed to liquid water.
Burning of carbon is a chemical change as in this case, carbon dioxide is generated which is chemically new with respect to carbon and oxygen.
