Concept explainers
Interpretation:
The result of addition of acids and bases needs to be explained.
Concept introduction:
Acids and bases results in the neutralization reaction.
Answer to Problem 1TAI
Acids and bases react to produce salt and water.
Explanation of Solution
Depending on the nature of acid and base, different salts are formed after neutralization reaction. If strong acid (HCl) reacts with weak base (NH4OH), then salt (NH4Cl) solution will be acidic. If weak acid (CH3COOH) reacts with strong base (NaOH), then salt (CH3COONa) solution will be basic. If the strength of acid (HCl) and base (NaOH) is same, then salt (NaCl) solution will be neutral.
Thus, acids and bases react to produce salt and water by neutralization reaction.
