Concept explainers
To ascertain:
The effect of cadmium on leaf size, chlorophyll content and rate of photosynthesis.
Introduction:
Cadmium is a heavy metal that is toxic to humans, plants and animals. It is present as a contaminant in soil. The given graph shows the effect of cadmium on the size of a leaf, chlorophyll content and rate of photosynthesis.
Answer to Problem 45A
Cadmium has a negative effect on leaf size, chlorophyll content and rate of photosynthesis.
Explanation of Solution
According to the given data, as the concentration of cadmium increases the chlorophyll content in the leaf decreases sharply at first and then becomes almost constant. The size of the leaf also decreases sharply. The rate of photosynthesis, as a result of a decline in chlorophyll content and leaf size, is also hampered. It too decreases with an increase in cadmium concentration in soil.
