Concept explainers
To explain:
The parts of a plant that would have most number of chloroplasts.
Introduction:
All living organisms need energy to carry out various cellular functions. Plants have their own way of deriving energy from the Sun. Chloroplasts are the organelles which capture solar energy in plants. Photosynthesisis an anabolic pathway in which light energy from the Sun is converted to chemical energy for use by the cell.
Answer to Problem 15STP
Leaves have most number of chloroplasts as organic food is made in the leaves by the process of photosynthesis.
Explanation of Solution
Chloroplasts contain a pigment called chlorophyll. Light energy is trapped by pigments called chlorophyll and converted to chemical energy during the process of photosynthesis. Chlorophyll also gives green color to leaves and stems. All the green parts of a plant contain chloroplasts but the leaves have maximum number of chloroplasts as they are kitchen of plants where photosynthesis occurs. Leaves make most of the food for the plant so chloroplasts are more concentrated in leaves.
