Concept explainers
To describe:
The kind of mixture formed when table salt is mixed with water and to identify its components
Introduction:
A mixture is a combination of two or more substances in which each substance retains its individual characteristics and properties. There are two kinds of mixtures; homogenous mixture and heterogenous mixture. When a mixture has uniform composition throughout, it is called a homogenous mixture. In a heterogenous mixture the components are distinct.
Answer to Problem 14STP
Table salt will form a homogenous mixture called solution with water.
The components of this mixture are salt (solute) and water (solvent).
Explanation of Solution
When table salt is added to water, it dissolves completely in water. Together they form a salt solution in which the salt dissolves completely in water. A solution is a homogenous mixture having a uniform composition throughout. Hence table salt forms a homogenous mixture with water.
The components of a solution are the solute and the solvent. A solute is a substance that is dissolved in the liquid. Here it is table salt. A solvent is a substance in which another substance is dissolved. Here it is water.
