Concept explainers
If the world pulls you downward against your chair, what is the reaction force?
The reaction force.
Answer to Problem 7A
The same force with which the world pulls us downward against our chair but in opposite direction.
Explanation of Solution
Introduction:
As per Newton’s third law of motion, for every force exerted there is an opposite and eqaul reaction force.
Now, if the world pulls us downward with a force against our chair, then an equal and opposite force must be acting as per Newton’s third law of motion. Thus, the reaction force for this applied force will be the equal and opposite of the force exerted by the world on us.
Conclusion:
Hence, the reaction force is of the same magnitude with which the world pulls us downward but it is in upward direction.
