Concept explainers
If you walk on a log that is floating in the water, the log moves backward. Why?
The reason that the log moves backward when a person walks on a log that is floating in the water.
Answer to Problem 28A
It moves backward because of the force exerted on it by the foot of the person.
Explanation of Solution
Introduction:
When a person walks on a floor, he/she exerts a force on the floor.
Now, when a person walks on a log that is floating in the water, he/she exerts a force on the log in opposite direction of its motion, or in the backward direction. Thus, the log moves in the backward direction in the water.
Conclusion:
The force exerted by the person on the log while walking on it results in a motion of the log in water in the backward direction.
