Concept explainers
If action equals reaction, why isn’t Earth pulled into orbit around a communications satellite?
To Explain: Earth isn’t pulled into orbit around communications satellites.
Explanation of Solution
Introduction:
As per Newton’s law of gravitation, there exists a force between two objects having mass. The gravitational force depends on the mass of the objects and distance between them.
The satellite revolves around the earth due to gravitational force between them. The satellite pulls the earth with equal amount but as the mass of the Earth extremely greater than the satellite, using Newton’s second law of motion, it can be understood that the Earth has negligible visible acceleration and motion around the satellite as compared to that of the communication satellite around the earth.
