Concept explainers
When a high jumper leaves the ground, what is the source of the upward force that accelerates her? What force acts after her feet are no longer in contact with the ground?
The source of upward force that accelerates a high jumper leaving the ground. Also, the force that acts after her feet are no longer in contact with the ground.
Answer to Problem 33A
The source of upward force that accelerates the high jumper is ground.
The force that is acting after the high jumper feet is off the ground is Earth’s gravitational force.
Explanation of Solution
Introduction:
According to Newton’s third law, for every action there is always an equal and opposite reaction.
As per Newton’s third law, objects exerts equal and opposite forces on each other, which means that when a high jumper pushes the ground, same force is exerted by the ground to push her up. So, the ground will exert a force that pushes the jumper upwards, thus providing an upward acceleration.
The force that acts in the air is the force of gravity that acts on the jumper, as an object is accelerating in downward direction.
Conclusion:
The source of upward force that accelerates the high jumper is ground.
The force that is acting after the high jumper feet is off the ground is Earth’s gravitational force.
