Explanation of Solution

Given:

From table of mass proportions, mass of the upper arm is 6.6 kg, the lower arm is 4.2 kg, and the hand is 1.7 kg. Assuming the height of the person is 155 cm.

Formula used:

The center of mass is calculated as,

  xcm=mxm

Calculation:

Considering origin at the shoulder and the upper arm is parallel to the x-axis and lower arm and hard in the y-axis.

  xupper arm=81.271.7=9.5 ; xlower arm=81.262.2=19.0 ; xhand=81.262.2=19.0

For calculating the relative mass of a single-arm, no need to consider the factor of two. Since in the denominator, the total mass of an arm is considered.

To calculate the center of mass, relative mass percentage can be used. Thus, the center of mass of a bent arm is
