Answer to Problem 22P

The speed of first ball after the collision v1=1.1 m/s towards east direction.

The speed of second ball after the collision v2=4.4 m/s towards east direction.

Explanation of Solution

Given:

The mass of first ball is m1=0.440 kg .

The initial velocity of the first ball is u1=3.3 m/s .

The mass of second ball is m2=0.220 kg .

The initial velocity of the second ball is u2=0 .

Formula used:

The expression for relative velocity is,

  u1u2=(v1v2)

Here, u1 is the initial velocity of first ball, u2 is the initial velocity of the second ball, v1 is the final velocity of first ball, and v2 is the final velocity of the second ball.

The expression for law of conservation of momentum is,

  m1u1+m2u2=m1v1+m2v2

Here, m1 is the mass of the first ball, m2 is the mass of second ball, u1 is the initial velocity of first ball, u2 is the initial velocity of the second ball, v1 is the final velocity of first ball, and v2 is the final velocity of the second ball.

Calculation:

The velocity of first ball after collision is,

  u1u2=(v1v2)(3.3 m/s)(0)=v2v13.3=v2v1v1=v23.3 …… (1)

The speed of ball using the relation of conservation of momentum is,

  m1u1+m2u2=m1v1+m2v2[(0.440 kg)(3.3 m/s)+(0.220 kg)(0)]=(0.440 kg)v1+(0.220 kg)v21.452=0.44(v23.3)+0.22v20.66v2=2.904v2=4.4 m/s

  v1=32v2 …… (1)

The velocity of second ball after collision is v2=4.4 m/s towards east direction.

The speed of first ball after the collision using equation (1) as follows:

  v1=v23.3v1=4.43.3v1=1.1 m/s

Conclusion:

Thus, the speed of first ball after the collision v1=1.1 m/s towards east direction.

Thus, the speed of second ball after the collision v2=4.4 m/s towards east direction.
