Expert Solution & Answer
Check Mark

Answer to Problem 25P

  v1=0.88 m/s , in the original direction

  v2=2.23 m/s , in the original direction.

Explanation of Solution

Given:

Mass of first tennis ball is m1=0.06 kg

Speed of the first tennis ball before collision is u1=2.50 m/s

Mass of second tennis ball is m2=0.09 kg

Speed of the second tennis ball before collision is u2=1.15 m/s

Formula used:

Let v1 and v2 be the final speed of the first and second tennis ball respectively. Since the collision between the balls are perfectly elastic, momentum is conserved. That is total initial momentum of the balls is equal to the total final momentum of the balls.

  m1u1+m2u2=m1v1+m2v2(1)

Also, for a perfectly elastic one dimensional collision,

  u1u2=v2v1

  v2=v1+u1u2(2)

Substituting this in equation (1) ,

  m1u1+m2u2=m1v1+m2(v1+u1u2)

  m1u1+m2u2=m1v1+m2v1+m2u1m2u2

  m1v1+m2v1=m1u1+m2u2m2u1+m2u2

  v1(m1+m2)=m2u1+2m2u2+m1u1

  v1=(m2u1+2m2u2+m1u1)(m1+m2)(3)

Calculation:

Substituting the numerical values in equation (3)

  v1=[(0.09 kg)(2.50 m/s)+2(0.09 kg)(1.15 m/s)+(0.06 kg)(2.50 m/s)](0.06 kg+0.09 kg)

  =[0.225 kg.m/s+0.207 kg.m/s+0.15 kg.m/s]0.15 kg

  =0.132 kg.m/s0.15 kg

  =0.88 m/s , in the original direction

Substituting the value of v1 and other numerical values in equation (2) ,

  v2=0.88 m/s + 2.50 m/s - 1.15 m/s

  =2.23 m/s , in the original direction.

Conclusion:

The speed and direction of each tennis ball after collision is,

  v1=0.88 m/s , in the original direction

  v2=2.23 m/s , in the original direction.
