Introduction: Optimal foraging model predicts a balancing act between the benefits of nutrition and the costs associated with foraging. The costs of foraging include the risk of being eaten by predators, energy expended in locating food and the distance of the food source from the nest. The most significant cost is the risk of falling prey to predators. This is seen in the case of mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) which feed predominantly in open areas to avoid falling prey to large predators like mountain lions (Puma concolor).
