Introduction: Cross-fostering studies examine how the animal’s social and physical environment influences its behavior. When male California mice (Peromyscus californicus), which exhibit parental care and extreme aggression toward intruders, are cross-fostered in the nests of white-footed mice (Peromyscus leucopus), the California mice showed decreased level of aggression and less parental care toward their offspring. The important observation in this study was that the influence of the environment on the behavior of the parent mice was passed onto the offspring. The influence of the experiences during development had modified the physiology of the mice in such a way that it altered the parental behavior and was passed onto the next generation.

- Which of the following statements best applies to the term adaptation? * A. Resistance increases as a result of exposure to prior stress B. Resistance decreases as a result of exposure to prior stress C. Genetically determined level of resistance acquired over generations D. Genetically determined level of resistance acquired in one generationarrow_forwardExplain why does only male mice used for testing behavioral studies, why not include the female mice and it is important to use both sex of mice for behavioral studies?arrow_forwardIn Biology of Beauty, Cowley found that contemporaryfemales are attracted to males with broad foreheads and strong chins, and that this effect persisted across different cultures. How did Cowley explain this result? A. This is a trick question- this attraction is culturally relative B. Males compete for access to females by developing these features as a form of male-male competition C. There is no evidence that females really are differentially attracted to males with these features D. Attraction to males with these features is adaptive for females because males with these traits are usually sexually mature and have healthy immune systems E. Only some human cultures value these traits as attractive.arrow_forward
- Which of the following is a correct order of events for limb development, from earliest occurring event to latest occurring event (for the three events in any given choice)? a.ZPA formation, Limb initiation/induction, Limb bud formation b.Limb placement, Fgf8 expression, ZPA formation c.Interdigital tissue regression, Fgf8 expression, Limb bud formation d.Limb placement, Interdigital tissue regression, Limb initiation/inductionarrow_forwardA. Explain what imprinting is (use an example if that would help, but you can't use Geese and Konrad Lorenze or any other bird). B. How does imprinting combine both instinct and learning? C. How might imprinting be affecting the selection of mates in humans and (D) the evolution of racial differences in humans?arrow_forwardIdentify the type of behavior. 1) 2) Goose. Bees attracted to the smell of the flower and flying towards the scent. _: Once initiated, it will run to completion and this could be observed in nesting behavior of Graylag 3)_ : A genetically program form of learning during developmental stage. Example: sparrow babies learn how to sing exactly at the same frequency as the mother. But if the babies grow isolated from their mother, the singing frequency will be different. 4) A turtle draws its head back into its shell when its shell is touched. After being touched repeatedly, the turtle realizes it is not in danger and no longer hides. This is an example of 5) : A child might stop throwing tantrums after his/her favorite toy is taken away after each tantrums.arrow_forward
- You see the results of an eye-tracking study in which infants were required to look at human faces. You see that infant A spent most time looking at the contour of the face, while infant B spent a lot of time looking at the eyes and the mouth.
