Answer to Problem 4.56RE

The highest daily precipitation is about 15 inches and the highest yearly precipitation is about 340 inches.

Explanation of Solution

We note on the scatterplot that Alaska has (approximate) coordinates ( 15,340 ) and thus the highest daily precipitation is about 15 inches and the highest yearly precipitation is about 340 inches.

(b)

To determine

To describe the nature of the relationship for other states and explain would knowing a state’s highest daily precipitation be a great help in predicting that state’s highest yearly precipitation.

(b)

Expert Solution
Check Mark

Explanation of Solution

We note that if we do not take into account Alaska and Hawaii, then the points seem to follow a horizontal line. Thus the relationship between the highest daily and yearly precipitation is then very weak.

This then also means that the highest daily precipitation does not seem to influence the highest yearly precipitation (much), and thus the highest daily precipitation will NOT be great help in predicting the highest yearly precipitation (because they do not seem to be influencing each other).
