Chapter 29.4, Problem 2C
Summary Introduction
To determine: Some ways that explain that the relationship between a plant root and a mycorrhizal
Introduction: Mycorrhiza is a symbiotic association between a fungus and the roots of a host plant. In this association, fungi colonize the host plant’s root tissues either intracellularly or extracellularly. Most plant species form mycorrhizal associations, though some families like Brassicaceae and Chenopodiaceae cannot form this association.

What are some ways in which the relationship between a plant root and a mycorrhizal fungus is mutualistic?
Mycorrhizal fungi form obligate symbiotic relationships within plants. They are able to fix N2 into a usable form of nitrogen. In exchange, they receive nutrition from the plant. Which of the following is a true statement concerning mycorrhizal fungi?
a) Finding a host plant is not crucial to their survival.
b) They are a dominant species.
c) They cannot survive without the host plant.
d) They are considered plant parasites.
What are mycorrhizas? How does each participant benefit in this ecological interaction?
