To explain: The statement that “Mushrooms are like the tips of icebergs”.
Introduction: Basidiocarp is formed from the dikaryotic secondary mycelium. These are reproductive structure and contain gills. These gills have basidia cells which undergo karyogamy and meiosis to form spores. These fruiting bodies are formed by members of Basidiomycetes.
To explain: Whether the absence of mushrooms in an individual’s lawn can be concluded as “no fungi live there”.

- Both bacteria and fungi are major environmental decomposers. Obviously competition exists in any given environment, but fungi usually have an advantage. What characteristics specific to fungi provide this advantage?arrow_forwardHealth professionals refer to fungal skin diseases as "“tineas" and name them according to the region affected. Fungal skin diseases are persistent, in part, because fungi can penetrate deeper layers of skin than can ointments and creams. There are fewer antifungal drugs than ones, and antifungals often have more severe side effects. Reflect on the evolutionary relationships among bacteria, fungi, and humans. 1. List 5 different "Tineas" to show the connection between the name and the body parts affected from them. 2. Are fungi unicellular or multicellular organism? 3. Why it is harder to fight fungi than bacteria? 4. Why antifungals have more severe side effects?arrow_forwardA student is using a Venn Diagram to communicate understanding of the similarities and differences between fungi and animals. The student placed key characteristics in each circle and classmates are asked to review the work. Qurdtion options: “You should remove ‘has a cell wall’ because neither fungi nor animals have a cell wall. “You need to move the term heterotroph to the ‘animals’ circle because fungi can be heterotrophic or autotrophic.” “You have all of the information correct.” “All animals only reproduce sexually so you need to move ‘may reproduce sexually or asexually ‘to fungi only.”arrow_forward
- Ascomycetes vary greatly in morphology (see also Figure 31.10).How could you confirm that a fungus is an ascomycete?arrow_forwardFungi were once classified in the same kingdom as plants. Which characteristic of fungi resulted in them being placed in a separate kingdom?arrow_forwardAscomycetes vary greatly in morphology . How could you confirm that a fungus is an ascomycete?arrow_forward
- While working in a plant disease diagnostic lab, you receive a sample of a very dead tomato plant. The plant has rotted roots and the symptoms match known fungal and oomycete diseases of tomatoes. Explain one difference between true fungi and oomycetes that you could observe to determine what type of organism is killing the tomatoes?arrow_forwardAre all fungi detrimental for other organisms? Explain why if yes or noarrow_forwardFUNGI USED TO BE CLASSIFIED IN THE SAME KINGDOM AS PLANTS. IN TIME, SCIENTIST OBSERVED A KEY CHARACTERISTICS THAT REQUIRED RECLASSIFICATION. WHAT WAS THAT CHARACTERISTIC?arrow_forward
- Explain at least three important roles for fungi growing in a temperate deciduous forest. What would happen if all the fungi in these forests went extinct? Explain, in detail, why ferns are better adapted for life on land than mosses. Explain how the structure of hyphae (and a mycelium) relates to the function of these cells.arrow_forwardMany fungi are important in food production. Give three (3) examples of food made with fungi.arrow_forwardThe ascomycete fungus that causes chestnut blight and has killed an estimated 4 billion chestnut trees in North America was accidentally imported from Asia. Why are plants particularly vulnerable to fungi imported from other regions? How do the plants in Asia protect themselves against ascomycete fungus so they are not affected?arrow_forward
