Concept explainers
Case summary:
In diabetes mellitus, the patients are enabling to produce enough insulin that causes increased blood glucose levels. If the blood glucose level rises high enough, then the kidney stops the reabsorption of glucose from the glomerular filtrate and excrete an excess of the glucose into the urine.
Adequate information:
The anti-diuretic hormone (ADH) helps in decreasing the urine volume. The posterior pituitary gland secretes it. Its secretion is stimulated by the osmoreceptor cells present in the plasma. They produce their response during an increased ion concentration of the blood.
To determine:
The effect produces by the glucose on urine concentration. Also, the way the body adjusts to the excess glucose in the urine is to be determined.
Given Information:
The excess quantity of glucose is excreted in the urine due to the increased level of blood glucose. The glucose level in the blood increase when the pancreas does not secrete a sufficient amount of insulin.

- Regulation of extracellular potassium is not particularly important because only about two percent of the total body potassium is in the extracellular fluid. TRUE or FALSEarrow_forwardPrepared or fast foods contain high levels of sodium. An excess of sodium in the diet can increase blood pressure and increase your risk of heart attack. The average student consumes many prepared foods, resulting in an excess of sodium in the diet.Excess sodium affects aldosterone secretion and sodium ion absorption in the kidneys, respectively, in the following way: Select one: a. Aldosterone Secretion Sodium Ion Reabsorption Decreases Decreases b. Aldosterone Secretion Sodium Ion Reabsorption Decreases Increases c. Aldosterone Secretion Sodium Ion Reabsorption Increases Increases d. Aldosterone Secretion Sodium Ion Reabsorption Increases Decreasesarrow_forwardDraw a graph showing the quantitative relation between the amount of glucose in the plasma vs. the amount of glucose absorbed in the kidney. Thinking about the graph just above, what factor(s)s do you think might be affected in an individual who has diabetes, and why?arrow_forward
- Say someone has a blood glucose level of 245 mg/dl. Which statement below would be correct? O They would exhibit glycosuria because the transport maximum of glucose has been exceeded. O They would exhibit glycosuria because of decreased osmosis in the urine collecting duct. O They would not exhibit glycosuria because the transport maximum of glucose has been exceeded. O They would not exhibit glycosuria because of decreased osmosis in the urine collecting duct.arrow_forwardCertain types of lung tumors secrete one or more hormones. What would happen to plasma and urine osmolality and urine volume in a patient with a lung tumor that secretes vasopressin? Why?arrow_forwardWhy does glucose appear in the urine of a diabetic? Group of answer choices The kidneys produce glucose in diabetes. The proteins for glucose reabsorption reach their maximum rate of transport. No glucose is filtered into the glomerular filtrate. Glucose is secreted into the nephron tubules.arrow_forward
- Proteinuria (protein in the urine) after intense exercise may be physiological (normal). However, protein is typically not present in urine. Why is that?arrow_forwardRenin is an important proteolytic enzyme produced by the kidney, involved in the control of salt/water balance in the body. Explain the source of renin, how it is secreted and how it acts to ultimately influence plasma volume. A separate hormonal system exists for directly controlling kidney water reabsorption. Explain how this hormone is released and how it exerts its renal effects.arrow_forwardIn pituitary diabetes insipidus, describe the renal handling of water and water balance in the patient in terms of frequency of thirst and urination.arrow_forward
- Glucose is normally 100% reabsorbed, such that no glucose is excreted in the urine. Explain why a person with diabetes and a blood glucose level of 450 mg/dL will have glucose excreted in his urine.arrow_forwardA young man is involved in a motorcycle accident that fractures his sphenoid bone. Shortly thereafter, he begins to excrete enormous amounts of urine, up to 30 liters per day, and suffers intense thirst. His neurologist diagnoses the problem as diabetes insipidus. Explain how his head injury resulted in these effects on urinary function and thirst. Why would a sphenoid fracture be more likely than an occipital bone fracture to cause diabetes insipidus? What hormone imbalance resulted from this accident? Would you expect to find elevated glucose in the urine of this diabetic patient? Why or why not?arrow_forwardTRUE or FALSE. Unneeded materials and waste travel to a collecting tube, which is part of a nephron. All of the blood in your body passes through your kidneys once a day Your liver is part of the urinary The main job of the kidneys is to filter your blood Capillaries carry blood into the nephron Water liquid is called urine There are 100 nephrons in each kidney Urine travels from your kidneys to your bladder in the urethra. Urine travels out of your body through the urethra. Blood leaves the kidneys through a renal vein and returns to the main circulatory system.arrow_forward
