Interpretation: To compare which device is more similar to the smoke detector.
Concept Introduction: Some devices are used to detect radiation. The radiations that are emitted by the radioisotopes are called ionizing radiations.
Answer to Problem 31LC
Out of the three devices, the Geiger counter is almost identical to the smoke detector.
Explanation of Solution
The radiations that are emitted by radioisotopes have large energy that they can even knock off electrons from atoms, producing ions. Thus, the radiations that are emitted by the radioisotopes are called ionizing radiations.
These radiations cannot be detected easily with the eyes, ears, or nose. Thus, to detect these radiations some devices are used that are as follows:
- Geiger counter
- Scintillation counters
- Film badges
The nitrogen and oxygen present in the air get ionized by the radiation that is emitted in a smoke detector and allows current to flow. When these ions are inside the smoke detector, they lose their charge and this leads to a decrease in the current.
Out of the three devices, the Geiger counter is almost identical to the smoke detector.
