Answer to Problem 79A

In the diagnosis of thyroid disorder, only an iodine-131 scan is used whereas in the treatment of thyroid disorder, therapy has to be done by delivering the radiation directly to radiation.

Explanation of Solution

In order to evaluate thyroid function in cases of hyperthyroidism, subclinical hyperthyroidism, multinodular goitre, toxic nodule, thyroiditis, and congenital hypothyroidism, the I-131 scan is a potent tool to make ectopic thyroid tissue visible.

During radioactive iodine therapy, experts employ this isotope to deliver radiation directly to tissues. After thyroid cancer surgery, I-131 is employed to remove any leftover thyroid tissue and eradicate any cancer cells that may still be present. Thyroid cancer that returns after initial treatment can also be treated with I-131.
