Given data:

It is given that there is second-order spectrum overlap with third order spectrum.

Formula used:

  sinθ=mλd

Where,

  d is the distance between lines.

  λ is wavelength.

  θ is angle of the normal.

Calculation:

The angle increases the wavelength increases.

Comparing the maximum angle for the second-order with the minimum angle for third-order,

  sinθ=mλd

  sinθ2max=2(750nm)d and sinθ3min=3(400nm)d

Dividing the both equations,

  sinθ3minsinθ2max=1200nm1500nm=0.8

As the value of sine increases with angle, i.e. θ3min<θ2max , so the orders overlap.

Let the second-order wavelength coincides with θ3min to determine the overlap:

  (2)λ2=(3)(400nm)

  λ2=600nm

Let the third-order wavelength coincides with θ2max to determine the overlap:

  (2)(750nm)=(3)λ3

  λ3=500nm

Conclusion: 600nm to 750nm of the second-order overlaps with 400nm to 500nm of the third order.
