To determine

The angle at which each beam leaves the prism.

Expert Solution & Answer
Check Mark

Answer to Problem 16P

  θd1=68.4° and θd2=65.2° .

Explanation of Solution

Given info:

Angle of incidence, i=45°

Apex angle of prism, ϕ=60°

First wavelength, λ1=450nm

Second wavelength, λ2=650nm

The refractive index of the silicate flint glass for λ1 is n1=1.64

The refractive index of the silicate flint glass for λ2 is n2=1.62

Formula used:

The angles of refraction in the glass: n1sinθ1=n2sinθ2

Where,

  n1 is Refractive index of first medium

  n2 is Refractive index of second medium

  θ1 is angle of incidence

  θ2 is angle at which light transmitted to another medium.

Calculation:

Calculation for the refraction at the first surface: It is having that nairsinθa=nsinθb

Now, substitute the give values:

  (1.00)sin(45°)=(1.642)sinθb1

  θb1=25.51°

  (1.00)sin(45°)=(1.619)sinθb2

  θb2=25.90°

Now, calculate the angle of incidence at the second surface from (90°θb)+(90°θc)+A=180° . This gives

  θc1=Aθb1=60.00°25.51°=34.49°

  θc2=Aθb2=60.00°25.90°=34.10°

Now, calculation for the refraction at the second surface. For this: nsinθc=nairsinθd . This gives,

  (1.642)sin(34.49°)=(1.00)sinθd1

  θd1=68.4° from the normal

  (1.619)sin(34.10°)=(1.00)sinθd2

  θd2=65.2° from the normal

Conclusion: The required angles are θd1=68.4° and θd2=65.2° .
