Concept Introduction:

Acid catalyzed hydrolysis involves an acid catalyst.

Acetals are derivatives of aldehydes or ketones having an alkoxy group.

An oxygen atom of the acetal is protonated using this acid catalyst forming a good leaving group.

When the leaving group breaks away from the carbon atom, a carbocation is formed.

The stability of the carbocation formed, determines the rate of hydrolysis of the acetal.
