Chapter 22, Problem 9A
Summary Introduction

Introduction :

Along with cell wall in plant cell there are many different cells that have specific function and form tissue. There are three types of cells that form the plant tissues. They function together to provide food production and storage; give flexibility, support, and strength to the plants. Parenchyma is the most flexible and thin cell found in the plants. Another tissue name vascular tissues are involve in the transportation of food, water, minerals, and other substances throughout the plant body. It works just like the blood vessels in humans.

Explanation of Solution

The given image represents the tracheids and vessel elements. Tracheids are the cylindrical shaped cells that are found end to end tubelike strands. They have end walls when they get mature just like the other mature vessels. Therefore, it is less efficient than the vessel elements in transporting materials. The plants made entirely of tracheids like gymnosperm are less adaptive to different environment in comparison to the plants composed of tracheids as well as vessels like flowering plants.

Conclusion

Thus, it concluded that the tracheids and vessel elements both are involved in transportation of water and materials. But tracheids is less efficient in transportation due to the presence of end wall.
