Concept explainers
To write: The benefit of the stem adaptations that allow some plants to store excess food.
Introduction:Stem of certain plants is delicate, versatile, and green (due to the presence of chloroplast), and therefore they can conduct photosynthesis. Those stems are known as herbaceous stems. Shrubs and trees have woody stems so they do not perform photosynthesis.
Explanation of Solution
All stems have adaptations that help plants to sustain life on the planet. These adaptations help some plant to store excess food and, in a few plants, it helps the plant to survive in unfavorable conditions such as drought, heat, or cold. Tomatoes and oaks have stems that do not have typicalstems. The tuber is the stem of white potato which is a swollen, underground stem with buds from which new potato can arise. It acts as food storage.
