Concept explainers
One of the major causes of sickness, death, and economic loss in the cattle industry is Mannheimia haemolytiea, which causes bovine pasteurellosis, or shipping fever. Non invasive delivery of a vaccine using transgenic plants expressing immunogens would reduce labor costs and trauma to livestock. An early step toward developing an edible vaccine is to determine whether an injected version of an antigen (usually a derivative of the pathogen) is capable of stimulating the development of antibodies in a test organism. The following table assesses the ability of a transgenic portion of a toxin (Lkt) of M. haemolytiea to stimulate development of specific antibodies in rabbits.
* Lkt50 is a smaller derivative of Lkt that lacks all hydrophobic regions. + indicates at least 50 percent neutralization of toxicity of Lkt; − indicates no neutralization activity.

- What is a recombinant DNA vaccine? List two such vaccines. State their advantages.arrow_forwardHow are vaccines tested? Describe the process from the initial clinical trials to vaccine authorization or approval (what is the difference between those?)arrow_forwardDuring the development process of a vaccine for the newly discovered Sars-COV-2 (COVID- 19) virus, pharmaceutical companies developed two potential vaccine candidates, BNT162b2 and Ad26.COV2. Some researchers postulated that BNT162b2 will be more ef- fective than Ad26.COV2 because only BNT162b2 directly targets the protein-manufactur- ing mechanisms in the cell. To test this claim, researchers proposed an experiment in which data will be collected about the efficacy of the two vaccine candidates. In the proposed study, two groups of mice will be randomly assigned one of the vaccine candidates and then infected with the virus. Data about the severity of symptoms in each group will then be collected. Which of the following describes a potential method for measuring the dependent variable in this experimental design? A B с D measure the amount of virus administered to each group measure the time between vaccine administration and virus infection in each group measure the amount of vaccine…arrow_forward
- The emergence of new cases of polio linked to the oral vaccine had been reported in a number of African and Asian countries, revealing that there are now more children being paralyzed by viruses originating in vaccines than in the wild. Viral contamination of a biological may arise from many factors, from handling to the origin of the materials used in the cell culture. a What could be the reason for the outbreak in those countries? D) The method of producing attenuated “live" vaccines involve passing the disease- tausing virus through a series of cell cultures or animal embryos (typically chick embryos). Explain the procedure in details and cite the reason why the method involve passing a virus through a non-human host?arrow_forwardWhy is it important to characterize the type of immune response elicited by a vaccine during vaccine development?arrow_forwardDescribe two advantages of an inactivated vaccine over an attenuated one.arrow_forward
- There were two patients without COVID-19 vaccines that came into the hospital with COVID-19 symptoms. A quick onsite point-of-care COVID-19 antibody test was done to see if they have a recent infection that could be active (as in the patient should not be around others because they could have the ability to spread the virius. The doctor found out that patient A's serum contains anti-COVID-19 IgG but not IgM and patient B's serum contains anti-COVID-19 IgM but not IgG. Which patient(s) have been infected with COVID-19? Of the patient(s) infected, is the infection(s) more likely to be in its early or later stage?arrow_forwardIn the event of an inflammation in the body, discuss the vaccine concept after indicating how the proteins that cause this formation in the cell where the inflammation occurs and therefore cause the initiation of the fight against this foreign substance.arrow_forwardA covid-19 vaccine is a biotechnology product intended to provide acquired immunity against coronavirus disease covid-19. As of december 2020, researchers are testing 59vaccines in clinical trials on humans and 16 have reached the final stages of testing. A covid vaccine developed by pfizer has been already approved for use in the uk and the first doses have been given to patients. vaccine typically require years of research and testing before reaching the clinic but in 2020, scientists embarked on a race to produce safe and effective coronavirus vaccine in record time. 1. companies developing vaccines, drugs and diagnostic for covid-19 for being forced to scale up manufacturing challenges to meet the enormous demand, what the manufacturing challenges to meet the covid-19 vaccine demand.arrow_forward
- Describe two advantages of an attenuated vaccine over an inactivated one.arrow_forwardMCQ --Rotarix is a vaccine indicated for the prevention of Rotavirus gastroenteritis caused by G1 and non-G1 types (G3, G4, and G9). Which of the following is NOT correct regards this vaccine? following immunisation, children may become irritable and experience diarrhoea ill infants or who born with SCID should not be immunized is live-attenuated vaccine derived from the G1P[8] rotavirus strain is prepared for IV administration is given in two doses None of the abovearrow_forwardIn relation to immunotechnology, answer the following: A- Answer the following in relation to Hybridoma technology: → What is the cancer cell line name used in hybridoma technology? → Give an example of murine Monocolonal Antibody produced by hybridoma technology? B- Give ONE main difference between: Murine MABs and fully human MABs? and explain the reason behind developing different forms of Monoclonal antibodies (chimeric MABs, humanized MABs, and fully human MABs) C- You are in an internship in one major Hospital, You were in rotation with a clinical pharmacist in oncology section and you came over a breast cancer patient. The personal doctor was making a quick visit to the patient to make sure the patient is following the therapeutic protocol and the treatment is running smoothly. The doctor wrote in the prescription sheet “Trastuzumab” to be dispensed by the In Patient Pharmacy, when the clinical pharmacist saw this he advised the doctor politely to use the…arrow_forward
