Answer to Problem 21R

The momentum of the elephant is larger than momentum of dolphin.

Explanation of Solution

Given:

Mass of an elephant is m1=6300kg .

The speed of that elephant is v1=0.11m/s .

Mass of a dolphin is m2=50kg .

The speed of the dolphin is v2=10.40m/s .

Formula used:

The equation for the momentum of the car can be expressed as

  p=mv....................(1)

Here, v and m are speed and mass.

Calculation:

For the elephant, momentum will be

  p1=m1v1....................(2)

For the dolphin, the momentum will be

  p2=m2v2....................(3)

Substitute 6300kg for m1 and 0.11m/s for v1 in equation (2)

  p1=(6300kg)×(0.11m/s)p1=693kgm/s

Substitute 50kg for m2 and 10.40m/s for v2 in equation (2)

  p2=(50kg)×(10.40m/s)p2=520kgm/s

Conclusion:

Hence, the momentum of the elephant is larger than momentum of dolphin.
