Chapter 21, Problem 33A
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

Double helical structure of DNA must be described. The type of bonding occurs within the chain of each strand and between two strands must also be explained.

Concept Introduction:

DNA is the nucleic acid which has double helical structure. The two strands are connected through Watson-Crick base pairing.

Answer to Problem 33A

DNA has two strands and that’s why it has double helical structure.

Phosphates are there to connect each subunit within the chain of each strand.

There is hydrogen bonding between two strands.

Explanation of Solution

DNA has one aldopentose sugar which is 2-Deoxy-D-Ribose. Nitrogenous bases are Adenine (A, purine), Guanine (G, purine), Cytosine (C, pyrimidine) and Thymine (T, pyrimidine). There is one phosphate group. This ribonucleotide is connected with other ribonucleotide units with phosphate linkage.

Between two strands there are hydrogen bonds.

A forms two hydrogen bond with T and G forms three hydrogen bonds with C.
