To determine:
The reason why Gram positive bacteremia is more responsive to antimicrobial drug treatment than the Gram negative bacteremia.
Introduction:
Bacteremia occurs when bacteria are present in blood. Gram positive bacteria respond to the treatment with antimicrobial drugs more often than Gram negative bacteria does mainly due to the differences in their cell wall structure. In Gram positive bacteria, the outer membrane is absent and the cell wall is
Gram positive bacteria have a multilayered peptidoglycan and a negligible lipopolysaccharide content, while Gram negative bacteria have a single and thin peptidoglycan and high lipopolysaccharide content. Also, Gram positive bacteria have low resistance to antimicrobials, dyes and dryness, and on contrary, Gram negative bacteria high resistance to antimicrobials, dyes and dryness.

Microbiology With Diseases By Taxonomy (6th Edition)
- Discuss the following virulence factors: collagenase, hemolysin, siderophore. For each, explain the molecules involved, the pathogen-host interaction, and name a species and disease associated with each factor.arrow_forwardBelow are a list of virulence factors/ strategies paired with an example of an organism that utilizes them. How do each of the following strategies contribute to the virulence of the pathogen? Strategy - Causes the host to produce more receptors (Organism - Rhinovirus) Strategy - Produces gas as a product of fermentation (Organism - Clostridium perfringens) Strategy - Produces a capsule (organism - Klebsiella pneumonia) Strategy - Ability to move between adjacent cells (organism - Cytomegalovirus) Strategy - Ability to use pilus as a motility structure (organism - Pseudomonas aerogenosa)arrow_forward1.) Why is boiling water not a recommended sterilization method? 2.) List examples of transfusion-transmitted infections. How are these infections prevented?arrow_forward
- In light of the current pandemic, give one strategy that scientists have developed to discover new antimicrobial agents. explain the strategy, the benefits and the current development of this strategy.arrow_forwardWhich of the following is NOT true of bacterial exotoxins? 1. Important in the pathogenesis of many human diseases 2. Their toxic effect can be systemic, affecting cells distant from the primary site of infection 3. None of the other four answers (All are true of bacterial exotoxins) 4. Different exotoxins may affect different types of cells (e.g., nerves, gastrointestinal mucosa) 5. Some exotoxins have two components, A (active) and B (binding)arrow_forwardPropionibacterium acnes is a normal member of the skin microbiome that benefits the body by lowering the skin's pH- an antimicrobial effect. However, P. acnes is also the leading cause of acne. Explain mechanistically how can a bacterium be normal and beneficial but also be pathogenic?arrow_forward
- The parents of a 3-day-old male neonate are concerned by their child's condition. The child is irritable, has fever and blisters over most of his body, and peeling skin as seen in the attached image. Which of the following virulence factors produced by the most likely causal agent is responsible for this condition? Answers A - E A Alpha-Toxin B Beta hemolysin C Exfoliative toxin D Pyrogenic exotoxin E Toxic shock syndrome toxin O Question #6 attachment O .0arrow_forwardWhy is it clinically important to distinguish S. pneumoniae from otherα-hemolytic streptococci?arrow_forwardIn the hospital setting, how effective is handwashing compared to hand sanitizer at controlling the spread of COVIVD-19 during the pandemic?arrow_forward
- Using the Koch's Postulates, support the findings that Mycobacterium tuberculosis is the causative agent of tuberculosis. Specifically, you have to provide brief narratives/pictures/proofs and sources that support the postulate listed below: The organism must be isolated from the newly infected animals and cultured again in the laboratory, after which it should be seen to be the same as the original organism.arrow_forwardDuring the current COVID 19 pandemic antibody tests have develop to track whether someone is exposed to COVID 19.If the antibody test results for one person is showing low levels of Igm and Igg in Person ? a)The person in the middle of 2nd exposure of infection b)The person is in the middle of his 3rd exposure or infection c)the person is in middle of his 1st exposure or infection d) the person is in the middle of his 4th exposure or infectionarrow_forwardA 65-year-old woman has a long-term central venous catheter for intravenous therapy. She develops fever and subsequently has multiple blood cultures positive for Staphylococcus epidermidis. All of the S. epidermidis isolates have the same colony morphology and antimicrobial susceptibility pattern, suggesting that they are the same strain. In what possible way do you think she has contracted the bacteria? Which link in the chain of infection has broken in this particular scenario and what will be your advice to avoid such infections?arrow_forward
