Concept explainers
A barge filled with scrap iron is in a canal lock. If the iron is thrown overboard, does the water level at the side of the lock rise, fall, or remain unchanged? Explain.
To explain: The effect on the level of water after throwing iron.
Answer to Problem 39A
The waterfall on the side of the lock.
Explanation of Solution
Introduction:
Archimedes principle: This principle states that the water displaces from container is equal to weight or buoyant force.
When an object floats in water, it displaces water which is equal to weight of that floating object, and this displaced water volume is greater than volume of an object. On the other hand when an object is submerged in liquid, then the volume of displaced water is equal to volume of submerged object. If the iron is thrown overboard, then iron will displace more amount of water. Therefore level of water on side of lock will fall.
Conclusion:
The water fall on side of lock.
