Introduction:
Cyanobacteria are also called blue-green algae because of their appearance. They possess a blue phycocyanin pigment. They are autotrophic so obtain their energy by the process called photosynthesis. Cyanobacteria are the only prokaryotes that possess both types of photosystems I and II. They may be unicellular, filamentous or colonial.
