Chapter 18, Problem 18.40UKC

(a)

Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

Number of molecules of acetyl CoA formed from catabolism of fatty acid below has to be determined.

Principles of General, Organic, Biological Chemistry, Chapter 18, Problem 18.40UKC , additional homework tip 1

Concept Introduction:

Fatty acid catabolism by β-oxidation produces two-carbon acetyl CoA units. Catabolism of fatty acids starts from conversion of fatty acids into acyl CoA. This process consumes 2 units of ATP. In this process, produced number of acetyl CoA molecules is equal to half of total number of carbon present in fatty acid. Also, number of cycles is 1 fewer than total number of molecules of acetyl CoA formed.

Number of NADH and FADH2 molecules produced in fatty acid catabolism by β-oxidation are equal to number of cycles required to completely catabolize fatty acids.

(b)

Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

Number of β-oxidation cycles required in complete catabolism of fatty acid below has to be determined.
