Chapter 18, Problem 18.49AP
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The below steps in the catabolism of carbohydrates have to be arranged in order.

electron transport chain, conversion of glucose to acetyl CoA, hydrolysis of starch, oxidative phosphorylation, and citric acid cycle

Concept Introduction:

Catabolism is defined as a process in that large biomolecules break down into smaller molecules with release of energy. While anabolism is defined as a process in that larger molecules are formed from smaller molecules and energy is absorbed.

The catabolic pathway for energy production occurs in four stages as follows:

1. Digestion

2. Formation of Acetyl CoA

3. Citric Acid Cycle

4. Electron Transport Chain and Oxidative Phosphorylation

The degradation of carbohydrate, lipid and protein can produce Acetyl coA. O True O False
Trypanosomes living in the bloodstream obtain all their free energy from glycolysis. They take up glucose from the host’s blood and excrete pyruvate as a waste product. In this part of their life cycle, trypanosomes do not carry out any oxidative phosphorylation, but they do use another oxygen-dependent pathway, which is absent in mammals, to oxidize NADH. Would this pathway be necessary if the trypanosome excreted lactate rather than pyruvate? Explain.
Glycolysis is the first step in the oxidation of fatty acids to produce energy. True or False
