Concept explainers
Dutch elm disease is caused by a fungus transmitted to elm trees by the elm bark beetle. The female beetle, when she has located an attractive elm tree, releases several pheromones, including multistriatin, below. These pheromones attract male beetles, which bring with them the deadly fungus.
Treating multistriatin with dilute aqueous acid at room temperature leads to the formation of a product,

- The compound p-methoxybenzonitrile N-oxide, which has the formula CH3OC6H4CNO, reacts with itself to form a dimer—a molecule that consists of two p-methoxybenzonitrile N-oxide units connected to each other (CH3OC6H4CNO)2. The reaction can be represented as A + A → B or 2 A → B where A represents p-methoxybenzonitrile N-oxide and B represents the dimer, (CH3OC6H4CNO)2. For the reaction in carbon tetrachloride at 40 °C with an initial concentration of 0.011 M, these data were obtained: Determine the rate law for the reaction. Determine the rate constant. Determine the order of the reaction with respect to A.arrow_forwardTwo useful organic compounds that contain Cl atoms are vinyl chloride (CH2 = CHCl) and chloroethane (CH3CH2Cl). Vinyl chloride is the starting material used to prepare poly(vinyl chloride), a plastic used in insulation, pipes, and bottles.Chloroethane (ethyl chloride) is a tica roman local anesthetic. Why is the C–Cl bond of vinyl chloride stronger than the C–Cl bond in chloroethane ?arrow_forwardan unknown has the formula C₆H₁₂O. The IR spectrum of this substance has a strong vibration near 1700 cm⁻¹ . Which structure below is consistent with these data?arrow_forward

- Chlorine is a catalytic pathway for the destruction of ozone. Show how the photodissociation of a molecule of C2F2C12 can destroy two molecules of ozone, O3.arrow_forwardAlcohols compose a very large family of organic molecules. The alcohol found in beer, wine and distilled spirits is ethanol. The breakdown of ethanol in humans begins with an enzyme called alcohol dehydrogenase, which is found in the liver. Accidental ingestion of methanol, an alcohol that is poisonous, can be treated by giving the person ethanol. By looking at the chemical structures below, comment on the likely mechanism of this treatment. - (a) What is the hybridization of the nitrogen in each of the following compounds? (b) How does hybridization affect the availability of the lone pair and the basicity of each compound?arrow_forwardUsed widely prior to the end of the 20th Century, chlorofluorocarbons (CFCS for short) were widely used as refrigerants for both industrial and household applications. One CFC, called Freon-11 (fluorotrichloromethane) is an organic compound that has been classified as an ozone depleting substance owing to its propensity to break down via a free radical process. It has a chemical formula of CFCl. Carefully examine the structural diagram of Freon-11 then click on its MOST polar bond. F C.
