Interpretation:
To determine the lowest chemical shift to observe for a proton that is attached to a double bond and for a proton on a carbon attached to an electronegative atom according to table 16-1.
Concept introduction:
Protons that are adjacent or near to a carbon having an electron-withdrawing group get deshielded and cause a downfield shift. Benzene and additional oxygen atoms also can cause such deshielding.
