Chapter 16, Problem 11PDQ

Erythritol, a natural sugar abundant in fruits and fermenting foods, is about 65 percent as sweet as table sugar and has about 95 percent fewer calories. It is “tooth friendly” and generally devoid of negative side effects as a human consumable product. Pathogenic Brucella strains that catabolize erythritol contain four closely spaced genes, all involved in erythritol metabolism. One of the four genes (eryD) encodes a product that represses the expression of the other three genes. Erythritol catabolism is stimulated by erythritol. Present a simple regulatory model to account for the regulation of erythritol catabolism in Brucella. Does this system appear to be under inducible or repressible control?

Hemoglobin molecules exposed to high levels of glucose are converted to glycated products. The glycated product used to measure blood glucose control in diabetics is hemoglobin A1C (HbA1C), contained in red blood cells that last around 3 months. In general terms, explain how HbA1C forms and why it is a useful marker for blood glucose control.
Filipina’s 3-year-old daughter, Manila, was brought to a clinic. The doctor diagnosed Manila with a severe dry cough.  A mucolytic solution was prescribed and to be administered for seven days. The prescription states, “Mucolytic, XYZ Brand, 60 ml, dosage-1 teaspoon 1 hour before a meal, 3x a day”.   Now, Filipina is skeptical of the dosage mentioned in the prescription regarding the proper amount of medicine to be administered to her daughter. If you are Filipina, how are you going to approach the case to make sure that your daughter will not have an overdose or underdose of the medicine prescribed? Apply the principle of accuracy and precision in the problem.
