Chapter 15, Problem 3TMW
Summary Introduction

To explain:

The reason that why pathogen-associated patterns (PAMPs) are necessary for Toll-like receptors (TLRs) to fully function.

Introduction:

Immune response is a response of the body towards foreign particle which activates the immune system of host. The body mechanisms which protects against the infections include innate and adaptive defense. Innate is the non specific type of defense of body which develops quickly. It provides general response regardless of pathogen type and exposure numbers. It nonspecifically kills the pathogen that invades the body. Innate mechanism includes mechanical barrier, natural killer cell, species resistance, chemical barriers, fever, inflammation and phagocytosis.

What are Toll-like receptors (TLRs)?
Toll-like receptors represent an ancient pathogen-recognition system. The first pattern recognition receptor (PRR) important in innate immune responses was discovered in the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster. Stimulation of this receptor, called Toll, induces: The synthesis of prostaglandins and leukotrienes The inflammatory response in Drosophila hemolymph vessels The production of antimicrobial peptides The recruitment of phagocytic cells to the site of infection The activation of Drosophila complement
What are the roles of the following cytokines in defense against infections: 1) TNF 2) IL-12 3) Type I Interferon
