Chapter 15, Problem 1CT
Summary Introduction

To answer:

How the inflammation caused by a chemical burn is similar and different from the inflammation caused by an infected cut and if the same medication can be used for both.

Introduction:

Inflammation is a mechanism of innate immunity. It is a protective response of body tissues to attack by harmful pathogens or irritants. The five cardinal signs of inflammation include heat, redness, pain, swelling and loss of function. Inflammation removes the stimulus that have caused cell injury (pathogen or irritants), cleans up and clears the damaged cells and initiate the repair of tissues. Inflammation maybe acute or chronic.

he classic signs of inflammation are that the tissue becomes hot, swollen, and painful, and the coloration of the overlying skin may change color slightly or significantly. Explain in detail the microscopic levels that occur that cause these macroscopic signs to appear (hot, swollen, painful, color change). How are these microscopic changes beneficial in terms of fighting infection? Are there any other microscopic events that are not immediately reflected in the macroscopic signs of inflammation?
Rebecca developed measles as a young child. As a teenager, she is re-exposed to the measles virus during an outbreak at her high school. What will most likely prevent Rebecca from experiencing any signs or symptoms of measles? As a result of her childhood exposure, her immune system can perform enhanced inflammatory response. As a result of her childhood exposure, her immune system can perform enhanced phagocytosis of virus-infected host cells. She has memory innate immune cells as a result of her childhood exposure. They would be primed to activate rapidly upon subsequent exposure to the same virus during the secondary immune response. She has memory B cells as a result of her childhood exposure. They would be primed to activate rapidly upon subsequent exposure to the same virus during the secondary immune response.
In the disease mononucleosis (“mono”), the spleen enlarges because of increased numbers of phagocytes and other cells. Common signs and symptoms of this disease include pale complexion, a tired feeling, and a lack of energy sometimes to the point of not being able to get out of bed. What might cause these signs and symptoms?   (Please include your citation, if there is. Thanks!)
