Chapter 1.3, Problem 19SSC
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The given statements needs to be explained on the basis of fact that a good scientific model is always tested and used making predictions.

Concept introduction:

A quest to discover the solution to a question by practicing the scientific method (or process) is described as Scientific investigation or experiment. In chemistry, models are used by chemists to explain their observations (sometimes perceptions) as they formulate (or form) theories.

Answer to Problem 19SSC

Molina and Rowland's model predicted that if CFC concentrations will increase then the level of ozone will be decreased accordingly.

Explanation of Solution

A group of unperfumed manufactured chemicals is Chlorofluorocarbons (or CFCs). Chlorofluorocarbons are anthropogenic compounds. CFCs were developed (or formed) as a safe choice to ammonia, a popular refrigerant. A lifetime of CFCs in the atmosphere is about 20-100 years. One free atom of chlorine from a molecule of CFC can cause so damage (or harmful).

The ozone layer is naturally formed by a reactive process in the stratosphere. The ozone layer is important because it protects our Earth from UV lights. Mainly, the ozone layer is a ring of protective gases protects Earth from UV rays.

Rowland and Molina found that CFCs can deplete the atmospheric ozone layer of Earth. This ozone layer of Earth blocks damaging UV rays of the sun. According to them, as the level of CFCs will increase, it may decrease the level of ozone.

Conclusion

Molina and Rowland's model explain the interactions between CFCs and ozone layer of the Earth.
