Chapter 1.2, Problem 14SSC
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

If you put a scale in an elevator and weigh yourself as you ascend and then descend. This is to be explained that does the scale have the same reading in both instances or not.

Concept introduction:

The action of measuring the size or quantity of anything is defined as a measurement. Weight is the measure of the stretch of gravity on a particular object. It is measured on a different scale. It does change with change in the location of an object.

Answer to Problem 14SSC

The scale has different reading in both (upward and downward) instances.

While moving upward on the elevator, body will feel heavier.

While moving downward on the elevator, body will feel lighter.

Explanation of Solution

An invisible force that pulls bodies (or objects) toward each other is defined by gravity. The normal force (N) is equivalent to an individuals' apparent weight.

In case, the elevator accelerates (or moves) upward, a person will feel (his body) a little heavier than normal. In other case, the elevator accelerates (or moves) downward, a person will feel (his body) a little lighter than normal. These both cases are because of gravity.

Conclusion

The weight depends on the gravitational force, which changes with the change in location. A person will weigh more while moving up and weigh less while moving down.
